working with shadows and lightI’ve worked with shadows for years and adore the effects and possibilities found within them. I’ve used shadows in projects in many ways and groups always seem to find new ideas and inspirations with them. Shadows contain secrets and stories – they take familiar things and turn them into something else…
Shadow theatre and shadow puppets are an age-old form of story-telling and still enchant as much as they did thousands of years ago. As human beings we are fascinated by shadows; we connect with the seasons and time of day through shadows cast by the sun, shadows may (or may not) create a sense of safety, shadows are a way of exploring the physics of the world around us. Much as I love the possibilities with digital technology, I adore the more “clunky” aspects of older machines such as overhead-projectors (they are an amazing resource and are in danger of dying out) and simple shadows created with a bed-sheet and a lamp! I love techniques that look beautiful and are simple to achieve, so that you don’t need expensive and elusive “kit”, you just need the right attitude to resources and time. |
